Berries seem to be a theme this summer. Last weekend we went blueberry picking on Murphy Dome near Ft. Wainwright. It was an interesting experience because we had heard rumors about great spots to pick berries but couldn't really nail down a specific place to go. The Alaskans were very hush hush on where to find the berries. It wasn't until later we found out that it's a big No-No to ask Alaskans where they pick blueberries. In fact, the day after we went picking, the front page of the newspaper read, "Fairbanks area's berry crop is a good one but don't ask me where to go". Seriously. It is a rite of passage in Alaskan living to find your own "spot" for berry picking. So, while we haven't found our "spot" just yet, we were able to find a few bushes and have a wonderful afternoon together. Of course, almost all the berries were gone by the time we got home.

I like that the natives are protective regarding the best spots to pick blueberries....sorry to hear that you made that faux pas...I read the article in the newspaper and it helped me to understand this protective attitude. Probably by year three you will have your owon secret blueberry, moose and salmon spots!
